Our Work

DP Electric

A time management system.

Client Description:

An Arizona-based Electrical Contracting company with an incredible emphasis on company integrity and values.

Challenge:

Foremen were spending too much time logging and correcting hours for construction workers. DP needed a software solution that could minimize time and optimize efficiency within time management while also integrating with their legacy contracting accounting system (not an easy task).

Solution:

After considering several time management software specialist organizations, DP Electric decided to take a chance on us. By carefully analyzing DP Electric’s needs and process flow, we constructed a time management system on an ASP.NET platform using SQL Server to house thousands of time cards. The time management application possessed intuitive time tracking features to automatically factor variables such as lunch time and multiple formen/job sites. In addition, the application was designed to be compatible with tablets to provide convenient access at jobsites.

Habit.ly

An app for creating good habits and breaking bad ones.

Habitly arose as a small side project, out of a want and need for a way to track the everyday habits and actions. We wanted an application to easily track things and also present the data in a visually pleasing manner which may lead to helping me improve on these habits whether they be good or bad.

Habitly is a standard Ruby on Rails application storing everything in a PostgreSQL database. The app is currently in very early development but can be found at www.habit.ly.

The Stack

The time management system stack is comprised on the ASP .NET platform using SQL Server to house thousands of time cards for DP Electric. Prior to choosing a platform we sifted through the various requirements and established a set of tradeoff comparisons for the technologies we had experience with. The requirement that it had to be a web app was a no-brainer, but that doesn’t exactly get you very far in today’s day and age. In the end, we opted for stability and track record because of the nature of the data we were intending to support, and the inherent consequences with a problematic system.

The Ins and Outs

The actual time card logic to calculate hours was surprisingly complex due to the rigidity needed by the client in combination with around-the-clock use. Although a rigid process makes for easy data consumption, it transfers the heavy lifting to the preparation logic. Constraints on time cards include designated start and end times, an auto-deducting lunch break (thirty minutes if the time card meets certain criteria), and multi-job site/multi-foreman situations. Hopefully we’ve got all the bases covered, but we’ve put the logic in various stored procedures; for modularity and more importantly, to let the database do what it does best.

Trials and Tribulations

The client had accounting software in place specifically designed for the contracting industry and was not quite ready to part ways, and this was for good reason. However, said accounting software (American Contractor) happened to be running on a server setup in the office storing everything in none other than Visual FoxPro (last updated in 2004). After countless hours of research, we managed to establish a connection between our SQL Server database and the flat VFP files with a linked server setup via SQL Server Management Studio

Making Sense of it all

After a few months of use on several different job sites, we had a tremendous amount of data at our disposal. In addition, the integration with the accounting software already in place led to the availability of numerous job site specific data points as well, such as the hourly budgets for each job site. Given the hours worked thus far, and the hours budgeted per job site, we could calculate the 'progress' for each job site in the system - a metric previously unavailable to the client without numerous man-hours of data manipulation.

For example adding a useful feature, a more robust user interface or simpler way of usability. Again, we will stay in communication with you to update on project statuses and any additional topics to be addressed.

Once the idea has been developed and deployed, we always want to make sure our work was done correctly. We will test and measure the effectiveness of the solution to ensure everything is working properly within our application and integration within your system. But we don’t want to just make sure the technology is working properly - we want to make sure the solution is working properly. Did it solve your problems?
